Trees offer opportunities for some rather unique adventures. Here is our list of a few must-experience “Tree Adventures”. Whether you are looking for an adrenaline rush or something a bit more tranquil, these trees have you covered!

1. The Boomslang, Kirstenbosch

Kirstenbosch Boomslang Walkway

The Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway is a curved steel and timber bridge that winds its way through and over the +/-430 trees of the Arboretum at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. It offers magnificent views of the garden and mountain. Inspired by a snake skeleton, it is informally called ‘The Boomslang‘ (meaning tree snake).

2. The Big Baobabs, Limpopo Province

Big Baobab

Visit the three largest Baobabs in South Africa. The Sagole Baobab lies between Tshipise and Pafuri in the far north of Limpopo province, and the Glencoe Baobab is located just outside Hoedspruit. The third one, the Sunland Big Baobab, boasts a bar inside the hollow trunk and is located on the mango farm Sunland, where day visitors are welcome.

3. Big Tree, Tsitsikamma

Big Tree

The “Big Tree” is well sign-posted and situated on the N2, just east of the entrance to Storms River Village. A 10-minute walk on the 500m wooden boardwalk leads you through indigenous forest to the Yellowwood giant. The tree is estimated to be ±800 years old; it stands 36.6 meters high and has a circumference of almost 9 meters.

4. Knysna Forest Walk

Knysna Forest

Knysna offers endless forest walks and hiking trails, all of them magnificent, like the 9km Woodcutters’ Walk, 5.6km Millwood Mine Walk, the Elephant Hiking Trails, Jubilee Creek Walk and Krisjna-se-Nek Trail. You’ll discover rivers, waterfalls and abundant flora amonst the giant forest trees. Keep your eyes open for small antelope, and off course the very evasive Knysna Loerie with its distinctive call.

5. Canopy Tour

Tsitsikama Canopy Tour

If you are looking for more action, one of the many canopy tours on offer in South Africa is just the thing. It is an unforgettable adventure as you slide from one platform to the next along a series of steel cables set amongst magnificent natural surroundings. The Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour offers you the chance to glide through the magnificent Tsitsikamma indigenous rainforest. Many of the platforms are built around giant Outeniqua Yellowwood trees. Standing within the crown of these 700-year old giants, looking down at the forest floor thirty metres below truly is an experience of a lifetime. Canopy tours are also on offer in the Drakensberg, the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve near Cape Town, Karkloof, Magaliesberg, Magoebaskloof and Swaziland.
